Perkins is one of the engine names you will hear most often when buying a diesel generator in the Gulf. Consultants know it, maintenance teams know it, and parts are easy to find. But "a Perkins generator" can mean anything from a 10 kVA set for a villa to a 2500 kVA set for a tower — so the first step is knowing which engine family you are actually looking at.
Perkins generators in the UAE: the engine series
Perkins builds its generator engines in families. Each family covers a band of ratings, and the engine code tells you which one you have. These are the standby ratings of the sets on our Perkins generator datasheets (50 Hz, 1500 rpm):
| Engine series | Example engine | Generator range (standby) |
|---|---|---|
| 400 Series | 403A-11G1, 404A-22G1 | about 10–22 kVA |
| 1100 Series | 1103A-33TG2, 1106A-70TAG3 | 33–220 kVA |
| 1200 Series | 1206A-E70TTAG3 | 225–275 kVA |
| 1500 Series | 1506A-E88TAG2 | 228–337 kVA |
| 1700 Series | 1706A-E93TAG2 | 343–388 kVA |
| 2200 / 2500 Series | 2506A-E15TAG2 | 400–550 kVA |
| 2800 Series | 2806A-E18TAG2 | 660–850 kVA |
| 4000 Series | 4008-TAG2, 4016-61TRG3 | 825–2500 kVA |
Where two families overlap — around 225–340 kVA, for example — the choice comes down to the load profile, the footprint and what the consultant has specified. Our page of standard generator sizes in kVA shows where each size sits.
Why Perkins is popular for standby power in the Gulf
- Service and parts. Perkins engines are common across the region, so filters, belts and service know-how are not hard to find.
- A rating for every job. From a small clinic to a data centre, there is a Perkins family that fits, so a contractor can keep one engine make across a whole project.
- Consultant familiarity. Perkins often appears on approved-make lists in specifications, which makes approvals smoother.
How to choose the right Perkins generator
- Start from the load, not the engine. List what must run and how it starts. Large motors, lifts and pumps need more generator than their running kW suggests. Our kVA calculator gives a first estimate.
- Prime or standby? A set that backs up the grid a few hours a year is chosen on its standby rating; a set that runs every day is chosen on its prime rating. See prime vs standby.
- Plan for UAE heat. Summer air at 45–50 °C reduces what an engine and radiator can deliver. Check the site rating on the datasheet, and give the canopy or room enough airflow.
- Open, canopy or container. Outdoor sets near people need a sound-attenuated canopy; large sets are often containerised. Indoor sets need ventilation and exhaust design.
- Controls and switching. An AMF controller and an automatic transfer switch turn a generator into real standby power.
Perkins, Cummins or Baudouin?
All three are good engines; the right one depends on the rating, the specification and your service plans. We compare them in Perkins vs Cummins vs Kubota.
Perkins generators from 4U
Our 4U-P range covers 41 Perkins-powered models from 9.9 to 2500 kVA, each with its own datasheet — for example the 4U-P500 on the 2506A-E15TAG2 engine. Sets come open, in a silent canopy or containerised, with Deep Sea controllers, 4U · Leroy-Somer | Stamford alternators and a 12-month / 1,000-hour warranty, supplied from our warehouse in SAIF Zone, Sharjah. Tell us the load and the site on WhatsApp and we will recommend the right model and send a quotation.
