On most UAE construction sites the permanent supply arrives late in the project, so a generator runs the site for months. Choosing a generator for a construction site is different from choosing a standby set: it works every day, in heat and dust, with loads that change hour by hour.
What a construction site generator has to run
- Tower cranes and hoists — large motors with heavy starting current
- Welding sets — sudden, uneven loads
- Concrete pumps, mixers and batching equipment
- Dewatering pumps — often running around the clock
- Site offices and cabins — air conditioning is the biggest load in summer
- Lighting for night shifts and security
Sizing: plan for starting, not just running
The mistake we see most is sizing a site generator on the running kW alone. A motor started direct-on-line can draw six to eight times its running current for a few seconds; if the generator is too small, voltage dips, contactors drop out and the crane trips.
- Find the largest motor and how it starts (direct, star-delta, soft starter or VFD). A soft starter or VFD on the crane can cut the generator size considerably.
- Add the running load of everything else, with a realistic diversity — not every welder and pump runs at once.
- Leave headroom for the next phase of the project.
As a rough guide: site cabins and small tools often need 20–60 kVA; a mid-rise site with a hoist 100–250 kVA; a tower-crane site 250–500 kVA or more. Our kVA calculator and the generator size chart help with the first estimate, then we check the motor list with you.
Prime rating, not standby
A site generator is the main supply, so choose it on its prime rating and keep the average load around 60–80% of it. Running a large set at very light load for months causes wet stacking; running a small set flat out shortens its life. See prime vs standby.
Heat, dust and noise
- Summer air at 45–50 °C reduces output — check the site rating and keep the radiator clean.
- Dust clogs air filters fast; shorten the service interval on site.
- A silent canopy protects the set and keeps noise down near site offices and neighbours.
Fuel: the daily logistics
A site set may run 10–24 hours a day. Work out the daily consumption from our fuel consumption chart, add an external fuel tank if the base tank will not last between deliveries, and keep the tank lockable — fuel theft is a real cost on open sites.
Safety and distribution
- Earth the generator properly and test the earth before use.
- Feed tools through distribution boards with earth-leakage protection.
- Size cables for the run length so the voltage at the far end stays within limits.
- Follow the requirements of the main contractor, the consultant and the local authority for temporary supplies.
Moving power around the site
Trailer-mounted generators can follow the work, and diesel light towers or solar light towers light the site at night without long cable runs.
Rent or buy?
For a short phase, renting can make sense; for a project of a year or more, or for a contractor with several sites, buying usually wins. We compare both in rent or buy a generator.
Generators for your site
We supply canopy and trailer-mounted generators from 10 to 2500 kVA, fuel tanks, distribution boards and light towers for construction sites across the UAE. Send us the crane and equipment list on WhatsApp and we will size the set and send a quotation.
