"Which engine is best?" is the most common question we get on WhatsApp. The honest answer: it depends on the kVA, the duty and where the set will be serviced. Here is how we think about the brands we supply.
Perkins
Perkins engines power a large share of the generators sold in the GCC, especially below 500 kVA.
- Strengths: very wide parts and service availability across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iraq; good fuel economy; familiar to almost every generator technician.
- Best for: commercial buildings, villas, telecom, standby applications from 10 to 500 kVA, and heavy-duty 4000 Series units up to 2500 kVA.
Cummins
Cummins builds its own engines and alternators and has a strong reputation on heavy sites.
- Strengths: robust load acceptance (handles large motor starts well), strong performance on prime and continuous duty, extensive dealer network.
- Best for: construction sites, industrial plants, rental fleets and large prime-power installations, including containerised 1000–2500 kVA sets.
Kubota
Kubota specialises in small, very quiet engines.
- Strengths: low noise, compact size, smooth running.
- Best for: 10–40 kVA sets for villas, clinics, shops, events and anywhere noise complaints are a risk.
Volvo Penta
- Strengths: excellent fuel efficiency and clean emissions in the 80–700 kVA range.
- Best for: hotels, commercial towers and sites where running cost over the life of the set matters most.
Chinese engine series
Modern Chinese engine platforms have matured considerably.
- Strengths: significantly lower purchase price, adequate performance for many standby applications.
- Best for: budget-driven projects, agriculture, and construction where the set will be replaced after the project.
- Watch for: parts availability in your specific location — we confirm the engine brand and support options in every quotation.
How to decide
Ask three questions:
- Standby or prime? For long daily run hours (common in Iraq and South Africa), prioritise heavy-duty engines and service access.
- Who will service it? Choose a brand your maintenance contractor already supports.
- What matters more — capex or opex? Cheaper engines can cost more over ten years in fuel and downtime.
We don't push one brand. Tell us your kVA and application and we will quote two or three engine options side by side. Browse the generator range or start with the kVA calculator.
